AWS Elemental Live HDR: HDR10, Dolby Vision live broadcast

AWS Elemental Live's HDR support — HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision Live IQ. The dual-output workflow for HDR-aware delivery alongside SDR fallback.

AWS Elemental Live's HDR support is broadcast-grade. For operators delivering HDR live broadcasts (sports, premium events, theatrical-grade live concerts), Elemental Live handles the metadata signaling, color-space management, and the dual-rendition workflow that delivers HDR to capable players + SDR fallback to legacy ones.

What AWS Elemental Live actually has

HDR10 (static metadata) with master-display + max-cll signaling for live broadcasts. HDR10+ (dynamic metadata) supported via Samsung's licensing arrangement. HLG (BBC/NHK broadcast standard) — frequently used for sports live HDR. Dolby Vision Live IQ — Dolby's real-time variant of Dolby Vision for live broadcast. Color-space conversion: BT.2020-encoded HDR live source → BT.709 SDR fallback rendition simultaneously, with proper tone-mapping. Multi-rendition live ABR ladders with HDR + SDR variants in the same package. SCTE-35 and SCTE-104 trigger handling preserved through HDR encoding.

Where it's the right fit

Broadcast-grade live HDR — sports broadcasters, premium event live (concerts, awards shows), live news in HDR territories. Operators with the full AWS Elemental stack where HDR live encoding flows through MediaPackage with proper HDR signaling preserved end-to-end. Studio-grade live where Dolby Vision Live IQ is contractually required.

Where the gaps show up

HDR live encoding is compute-intensive — the per-channel-hour cost is meaningfully higher than SDR live. Smaller operators with occasional HDR live events overpay relative to dedicated HDR live infrastructure. Multi-region HDR live is operationally complex (replicating HDR streams across regions while preserving metadata is its own challenge).

Pricing implications

HDR live encoding adds a per-input-channel-hour premium over SDR live — typically 50-100% additional. Dolby Vision Live IQ has separate licensing fees that flow through your AWS bill via Dolby's arrangement with AWS.

The MpegFlow angle

MpegFlow Live HDR support is on the 2026 Q4 roadmap alongside DRM and the Q3 live MVP. Today, AWS Elemental Live is one of the few production-grade options for live HDR broadcasts. The orchestration angle for live HDR will be the same as VOD HDR: dedicated worker pools with HDR-capable encoders, audit log records the HDR metadata produced per rendition.
