Wowza multi-protocol ingest: RTMP, SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, MPEG-TS

Wowza's contribution protocol support — the deepest in the category. RTMP, RTMPE, RTSP, MPEG-TS, SRT, WebRTC, HLS pull-ingest, and where multi-protocol breadth matters.

Wowza's multi-protocol ingest support is the deepest in the live-streaming vendor category. For workflows that need to accept contribution from a heterogeneous set of sources — broadcast camera feeds, OBS streamers, IP camera RTSP streams, browser-based WebRTC contribution, contribution-network MPEG-TS feeds — Wowza's breadth is genuinely unmatched.

What Wowza actually has

Ingest protocols: RTMP (still the legacy default for OBS/contribution gear), RTMPE (encrypted RTMP), RTSP (camera and surveillance contribution), MPEG-TS over UDP (broadcast contribution networks), MPEG-TS over RTP, SRT (Secure Reliable Transport, broadcast-grade), WebRTC via WHIP (browser-based contribution), HLS pull-ingest (consume an existing HLS stream as input). Push and pull modes for most protocols. Authentication: per-protocol auth (RTMP secure tokens, SRT passphrase, WebRTC OAuth), with custom authentication modules for enterprise SSO integration. Stream re-publishing: ingest one protocol, output another, on the fly. Stream alias mapping: rename incoming streams to standardized names for downstream packaging. SCTE-35 ad-marker passthrough for broadcast workflows.

Where it's the right fit

Broadcast contribution networks where multiple feeds in different protocols aggregate to a single Wowza Streaming Engine. Surveillance and security video (RTSP from cameras converted to WebRTC for browser playback). Hybrid contribution flows (broadcast SRT contribution + studio MPEG-TS + remote RTMP all into one workflow). Migration scenarios where legacy RTMP infrastructure needs to coexist with new SRT or WebRTC contribution.

Where the gaps show up

Multi-protocol contribution is operationally complex regardless of vendor — Wowza supports it, but tuning each protocol for production-grade reliability requires expertise. Some specific protocol features (very-low-latency WebRTC at large scale, HLS-LL contribution beyond simple pull-ingest) lag dedicated WebRTC vendors (Twilio, Agora) and dedicated LL-HLS specialists.

Pricing implications

Multi-protocol support is included in Wowza Streaming Engine licensing — no per-protocol additional charge. The cloud variant's tiered pricing is the same regardless of which protocols are in use.

The MpegFlow angle

MpegFlow Live (2026 Q3) ships with SRT + RTMP + WebRTC ingest covering ~95% of contribution scenarios. Less protocol breadth than Wowza for niche broadcast use cases. For workflows requiring RTSP (IP camera contribution), MPEG-TS-over-RTP, or HLS pull-ingest at production scale, Wowza remains the more battle-tested choice today. Many MpegFlow design partners pair the two: Wowza for ingest + MpegFlow for VOD orchestration.
